Steyn On "President Solyndra"

"So let’s see. The president sneers at the ignorance of 15th-century Spaniards, when in fact he is the one entirely ignorant of them. A man who has enjoyed a million dollars of elite education yet has never created a dime of wealth in his life sneers at a crippled farm boy with an eighth-grade schooling who establishes a successful business... A man whose own budget officials predict the collapse of the entire U.S. economy by 2027 sneers at a solvent predecessor for being insufficiently “forward-looking.”..."
That's from Steyn's masterful putdown of Obama - he's all over him again and again like a Frank Zappa guitar solo. Whilst it may be true that collapse cannot be avoided now, nontheless I love to see the commies get slapped around like that. You know somebody should start recording Steyn's stuff with the jab and parry cadence of spoken word so that, when I'm frying eggs or something, I can stick it on the record player on repeat while I'm busy. Steyn's just about good enough for that.

  1. Mark Steyn on the lack of difference between conservatives and democrats:

"Once the state swells to a certain size, the people available to fill the ever expanding number of government jobs will be statists--sometimes hard-core Marxist statists, sometimes social-engineering multiculti statist, sometimes fluffily 'compassionate' statist. ....you've got a beauracracy for liIe: these people called conservatives (except in exceptional cases, likeThatcher), they fulfill the same function in the system as the first-year boys at wintry English boarding schools who for tuppenceha'penny would agree to go and take the chill off the toilet seat in the unheated lavatories until prefects were ready to stroll in and assume their rightful place. Republicans have gotten good at keepin the seat warm."

"The alliance of political statists and judicial statists is moving us into a land beyond law."

  2. The problem is, at least in part, error; many of the so-called "conservatives" can't think through from first principles anymore and they therefore don't understand where the Left are coming from (places like Ricochet are full of them). That's also true of lots of people on the Left too (i.e. they are just naive well-meaning types concerned about the poor or the environment but, for whatever reason, they don't quite realize that people like Naomi Klein are not substantially different from the Bolsheviks). I think one reason for this might be the Left's march under the banner of Democracy as "much more" than just a means of changing the ruling party. In the old days, that "much more" would have meant Liberalism - i.e. limitations on the State (the bill of rights and so on). But that has since been subverted by the Left with their demand for forcible "redistribution" and regulation in the name of Equality in matters both great and small. Yet the democracy "brand", for want of a better term, still has widespread pan-political support following WW2, and the Left have used that as cover to advance the growth of the State.
