"Fertilizing The Biosphere"

"...coal is the single greatest threat to civilisation and all life on our planet."
"The trains carrying coal to power plants are death trains. Coal-fired power plants are factories of death."
James Hanson, director of NASA's Goddard Institute for Space Studies in an article published by the Observer on 15th February 2009.
"...if our interpretation of the data is correct, the surge of fossil fuel emissions, especially from coal burning, along with the increasing atmospheric CO2 level is ‘fertilizing’ the biosphere, and thus limiting the growth of atmospheric CO2."
James Hanson, director of NASA's Goddard Institute for Space Studies in a new paper made available for free pdf download by IOP science, 28th March 2013.

From "factories of death" to "fertilizers of the biosphere" - that's quite a turnaround. But is he right?
